Sources tell Nexus Point News that Gabriel Basso is in talks to join the cast of Legendary Pictures’ Gundam.

Gundam, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise, is one of Japan’s most iconic and influential franchises. Known for its political intrigue and realistic depiction of war, the series focuses on conflicts between Earth and its space colonies, fought using giant humanoid machines known as Mobile Suits. Since its debut in 1979, Gundam has spawned countless anime series, films, manga, and video games.

The live-action Gundam film is adapting Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, a gritty, ground-level story set during the One Year War, Nexus Point News has learned. The original series follows a squad of Earth Federation soldiers battling Zeon forces in the jungles of Southeast Asia while exploring themes of loyalty, tragedy, and the human cost of war. A star-crossed romance between a Federation officer and a woman from Zeon is at its heart, a dynamic the film will mirror, with Sydney Sweeney playing a young woman on a mission to avenge her father and Noah Centineo potentially portraying her rival and love interest from the Earth Federation.

Jim Mickle, best known for Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, is set to direct and write the script. Legendary Pictures will be producing the film in collaboration with Bandai Namco. Gabriel Basso joins Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo who are set to lead the film. Legendary did not immediately return for comment.

Gabriel Basso most recently starred in the second chapter of The Strangers prequel trilogy with the first chapter releasing in 2024 and the third chapter set to premiere in February of this year. Basso also most recently appeared in Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite and Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2. He’s best known for his roles in Super 8 and The Night Agent. Basso will also next be seen in Amazon MGM’s Love of Your Life alongside Margaret Qualley, Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Catherine Keener.

Production for Gundam will begin this Spring in Australia.
