  • REVIEW: ‘Exceptional X-Men’ #11 — Cameos, Coming Of Age, And A Crisis Of Self

Before diving into the details, I have to say: if anything happens to Bronze, Axo, or Melee, I’m going to be seriously upset. Eve Ewing has crafted something genuinely refreshing with these three young mutants. In an era where many X-Men stories lean heavily into tragedy, survival, and ideological warfare, Exceptional X-Men  has stood out as something more grounded, more personal. It often reads more like a slice-of-life tale than a battle for mutantkind’s future, and that’s been one of its greatest strengths. Of course, that doesn’t mean conflict is absent. © Marvel While our trio is enjoying a peaceful afternoon walk through the park on their way to meet with the veteran X-Men, they come across a strange anomaly, like a glowing distortion on a bench. Naturally, something (or someone) emerges from it. Enter Tank, a mutant capable of manipulating his molecular structure and creating space-time portals. He wastes no time causing trouble, but thankfully, Riri Williams (Ironheart) arrives just in time to help drive him off before anyone gets hurt. We get a fun, warm exchange between the young heroes, including a nice bit of lore from Trista about her and Riri’s shared history, before she and the others all head to what Riri calls a “Mutant Meeting.” But this meeting turns out to be more of a surprise celebration. Kitty, Bobby, and Emma have planned a “Teamiversary” to honor the teens’ progress and growth. The mood is light until Melee brings up the earlier encounter with Tank. While most of the team praises the teens for handling themselves, Kitty disagrees. Her concern quickly escalates, criticizing how casual everyone has become about the constant threats facing their protégés, and she leaves the gathering abruptly, visibly shaken. I really appreciated the shift in perspective here. Following Kitty as she steps away from the celebration adds emotional depth and shows how this story balances both generations of X-Men. Kitty was an intriguing lead from the start of this series, and it’s been compelling to watch her attempt to escape the chaos of mutant life by relocating to Chicago, only for both chaos and romance to find her. Speaking of romance, there's a great (and awkward) scene between Kitty and Nina, the woman she’s been dating. Kitty returns a forgotten item, only to be confronted with the dreaded question: “What are we?” I’ll spare the cringey details, but the interaction is deeply human, and Kitty literally vanishes after it. Not by phasing away, but by falling into the same space-time portal we saw earlier, setting us up for a cliffhanger. This issue really hits all the right notes. The action, the humor, the emotional beats—all of it lands. Most importantly, the newer characters never feel overshadowed by the legacy X-Men. Eve Ewing continues to deliver one of the most consistently enjoyable and emotionally rich mutant books on shelves right now. If you're not reading Exceptional X-Men , you're missing something truly special. © Marvel Release Date:  July 16, 2025 Written by:  Eve Ewing Art by: Federica Mancin Cover by: Carmen Carnero Page Count: 27 Synopsis :  The EXCEPTIONAL team has a surprise encounter with another tried-and-true young Chicago hero, the ICONIC IRONHEART!

  • EXCLUSIVE: What We Know About DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’

DC Studios’ Clayface  is set to be the third feature film as part of the DC Universe. Described as an R-rated body horror, it’s set to explore the origins of the monstrous, shapeshifting Batman rogue. Clayface was originally conceived by Mike Flanagan ( The Haunting of Hill House , Doctor Sleep ) who first expressed interest in the character in 2021 and over the years had pitched the idea to DC Films and later DC Studios in 2023. Flanagan had begun to develop the film as part of the Batman Epic Crime Saga. In December 2024, DC Studios had greenlit Flanagan’s script as part of the DCU with Matt Reeves attached to still produce the film along with DC Studios. Flanagan was originally attached to direct the film as well but was unable to due to his upcoming Carrie  and The Exorcist projects. In February 2025, James Watkins ( Speak No Evil ) came on board to direct. Clayface  is currently set to begin production in early September and continue through October in the UK. Following a lengthy casting process, a short list of actors was assembled to screen test for the role of Matt Hagen. Tom Blyth, George Mackay, Jack O’Connell, Tom Rhys Harries, and Leo Woodall all tested for the role of Matt, with Rhys Harries winning the role. Rhys Harries ( White Lines , Suspicion ) was officially cast in June 2025. As announced by Flanagan, the script is inspired by the Batman: The Animated Series  two part episode, “Feat of Clay.” Similar to the episode, the character of Clayface in the film will be named Matt Hagen as amalgamation of Hagen with Basil Karlo’s backstory.  Sources tell Nexus Point News that Hagen is a handsome, up and coming actor who’s attacked and disfigured. Originally from Gotham, he moves to Hollywood to escape his troubled past and begin a career as an actor. With his disfigurement, his career and outlet as an actor is ruined and is eventually transformed into a shapeshifting monster. In the comics, Hagen debuted in Detective Comics  #298 in 1961 and was created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. Hagen was originally a treasure hunter who transformed into Clayface after an encounter with protoplasm. Karlo debuted in Detective Comics #40 in 1940 and was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. In the Golden Age, Karlo was a disgraced actor who donned the costume of a character he portrayed known as Clayface and sought to murder the crew and cast of the remake of a film he once starred in. Hagen’s love interest and co-star in the film is scientist, Dr. Caitlin Bates, an original character created for the film. Bates is the CEO of a biotech startup seeking to create cutting edge medicine and medical technology. Bates sees Hagen as a way to grow her company and cure his condition. Throughout the process she falls in love with him while her fiance John grows suspicious of their relationship. John is a detective and committed to Caitlin and his job. The antagonist of the film is set to be a crime boss, who like Caitlin and John, is another original character. At the moment, the film is not set to feature any recognizable DC characters and will primarily consist of original characters in this character driven horror film.  Clayface is set to release on September 11, 2026 as part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of the DCU.

  • REVIEW: 'Zombies: Dawn of The Vampires' Clings To The Past When It's Time To Let Go

The Zombies (plus a werewolf and a half-alien) bid farewell to Seabrook and went their separate ways in what was once believed to be the end of the supernatural musical franchise in 2022's Zombies 3 . Now they are reunited to backseat drive the journey of new star-crossed lovers in Zombies: Dawn of the Vampires . Zombies is arguably tied with Descendants as Disney Channel's current tentpole musical franchise. Dawn of the Vampires is Zombies' fourth movie, which follows Zed (not you, Power Rangers), Addison, Eliza, and Willa as they take a break from their college lives to go on a road trip. Their plans go off-road when they stumble upon secret warring nations between daywalkers and vampires. In true Shakespearean fashion, lovers on opposite sides strive to end the conflict with the help of the Seabrook gang. Dawn of the Vampires has everything you would expect from a Zombies movie: infectious choreography, head-bobbing music, a vibrant atmosphere, a talented cast, and a story about segregation. That being said, it is the worst movie in the series as it tries too hard to revive a franchise that has been gone for five minutes with new blood while holding on to the original for dear life. The movie suffers from an identity crisis as a result. Breaking Dawn © Disney Zombies: Dawn of the Vampires ushers in a new generation of supernatural beings who happen to know how to sing and dance. English pop star Freya Skye as the daywalker Nova, and Villains of Valley View star Malachi Barton as the vampire Victor, lead the new generation in the familiar story of different races learning to accept each other after a lifetime of conflict. They're both charismatic, talented, and display potential to lead a film series on their own. However, they have a weird dynamic with Milo Manheim and Meg Donelly's Zed and Addison, the original star-crossed soulmates. Nova and Victor are more fleshed out as the central characters, while Zed and Addison feel like an unnecessary presence in what's supposedly their movie. As phenomenal as Manheim and Donelly are, Dawn of the Vampires does not do any favors for their characters. Zed and Addison don't do anything to push the story forward; they are there to remind everyone that this is a Zombies movie, and Victor and Nova are their younger selves in a spiritual sense. Seeing them together is like seeing parents trying hard to connect to their children. It is as awkward as you can imagine, given how their ages are not far apart. Movement, Music... Magic © Disney Despite so much young talent being wasted, Dawn of the Vampires shines bright with the music and dance choreography. Those redeeming qualities make this film worth watching once. Paul Coen is no Kenny Ortega, but that does not stop him from harnessing the amazing powers of performers to deliver a musical that is a worthy rival to Descendants . It is impossible to remain still when you hear songs like "Don't Mess With Us" or "The Place To Be". As for the dance choreography, it is nothing short of hypnotic. The spotlight is generously shared with the background performers in each dance number. They may not have words, but they say everything we need to know about them through their sheer power of rhythm. Please Just Pass The Torch Already © Disney Zombies: Dawn of the Vampires is proof that the saga of the characters we met in the first three movies is over. We said goodbye once, we do not need to say it again, especially in such an awkward manner. Dawn of the Vampires would have been better off as a spinoff instead of a sequel. The story has potential, visuals are stunning for a kids' TV movie, and the cast is ripe with talent, so having the future weighed down by the past is a disservice to everyone involved in the production of this movie. Rating: ★★★☆☆ © Disney About Zombies: Dawn of The Vampires Premiere Date:  July 11, 2025 Executive Producers: Writers: Josh A. Cagan, Joseph Raso, David Light Director: Paul Hoen Production:  Bloor Street Productions, Night Zone Productions, Disney Branded Television Distribution:  Disney + Cast:   Milo Manheim, Meg Donelly, Malachi Barton, Freya Skye, Julian Lerner, Kylee Russell, Chandler Kinney, Swayam Bhatia, Lisa Chappell, Jonno Roberts, Mekonnen Knife Synopsis: After their summer road trip takes an unexpected detour, Seabrook’s zombie/cheerleader-alien sweethearts Zed and Addison inadvertently become camp counselors to two opposing monster factions — Daywalkers and Vampires. As tensions flare between the rival groups, the Seabrook crew must convince Nova, a Daywalker, and Victor, a Vampire, to try to unite their warring worlds to prevent a greater threat that endangers them all.

  • REVIEW: 'Poker Face' Season 2 Episode 12 Stumbles On A Predictable Plot Twist

This article contains major spoilers for Poker Face . Written by Laura Deeley and directed by Natasha Lyonne, Poker Face  bows out of its second series with an episode that is both thrilling and frustrating in equal measure. “The End of the Road” picks up directly where the penultimate episode left off, with Charlie and Alex heading towards Beatrix Hasp after being actively pursued by the FBI and the infamous hitman known only as the Iguana. We discover that the Iguana is suspected of over 50 kills and is wanted by every Western government. Whoever they are, they’re good, and naturally, they’ve found themselves in a spot of bother with Charlie Cale. The stakes are set high early on. The FBI is desperate to keep Hasp alive so she can testify, and we are warned that the Iguana’s disguises are flawless, making them effectively invisible. However, Agent Luca Clark (Simon Helberg) is one of the few who seems to understand just how resourceful Charlie can be, warning the NSA and CIA to “underestimate her at your peril.” For much of the episode, paranoia runs rampant, and the tension is palpable. Charlie and Alex (Patti Harrison) scan every face they cross on the road, and in the diner they stop in for snacks and further disguise. Jumpy and unsettled, anyone could be a suspect. The pair zero in on a man with a suspiciously bandaged hand, which mirrors the one ‘Todd’ (Justin Theroux) had in the previous episode. It feels too good to be true, and it is. © Peacock When they arrive at Hasp’s safe house, Charlie immediately senses something is wrong. Trusting her instincts, she tells Alex to stay in the car and to press the horn if anything seems off. Hasp won’t answer the front door, so Charlie circles the back to investigate. Meanwhile, Alex begins frantically honking the horn to alert Charlie. By the time she races back to the car, Alex is gone. Inside and around the house lie the bodies of dead agents and Hasp. It's clear the situation has spiralled into something far more dangerous. However, all is not as it seems. Or it is, if you’ve been as suspicious of Alex as I have. The twist, that Alex was the Iguana all along, is where the episode both shines and falters. On the one hand, the reveal is executed in a way that allows Natasha Lyonne to deliver another standout performance, never letting Charlie’s weariness dull her wit or empathy. “Cut the shit. Come on out, I know who you are,” Charlie declares when she finally confronts Alex, only to find her holding her gun to her head. Alex’s plan is revealed in full: from staging the murder of Hasp’s son to manipulating Charlie’s compulsive need to help “the world’s victims and losers,” the woman had been playing her like a fiddle from the start. On the other hand, the twist was foreshadowed so heavily that it weakened the impact. Poker Face  has never, and will never be, a series that underestimates its audience, but it’s safe to say that Alex’s behaviour since she sought Charlie out in New York has been suspicious, and even the moment she presses the car horn to draw our heroine away, all seemed too conspicuous. By the time the truth is revealed, you expect it, which dampens the moment somewhat. Still, their showdown is compelling, with Alex declaring that Charlie has been the greatest challenge of her career and even admitting that she wishes she didn’t have to kill her. Their deadly game of two truths and a lie in a speeding car on route to the Grand Canyon Canyon is a fittingly absurd climax, ending with Charlie rolling out of the car just in time to cling to the cliff edge while Alex and the vehicle go up in flames. The final five minutes strike a bittersweet note. Charlie, tearful and shivering, is given a head start by Luca (“Next time, Charlie, I will arrest you. I mean, I have to at this point.”), before hitching a ride with a trucker, as a dog latches themselves onto her. Lyonne is incredible, and it’s a shame that the series was split into two regarding Emmy eligibility, as she would be a deserving nominee for her work in the latter part of the series. Overall, the finale is a mixed bag. The performances stand out among the plot and there are some great lines (“You know what, I think uh, I think I uh, I think I just like people,” Charlie admits with heartbreaking simplicity), but the predictability of the twist undermines the tension Deeley and Lyonne set out to create, making the episode feel contrived. It would also be a shame if we don’t get a third series. There’s clearly more life in Charlie yet, even if one wonders just how much further they can stretch this formula. • REVIEW: 'Uncanny X-Men' #17 - Fear, Film, And Forgotten Plotlines

When it comes to Uncanny X-Men , I find myself constantly swinging between being fully on board with what it's doing and feeling completely lost. Issue #17 falls more into the latter camp. Not necessarily because of what’s in the issue, but because of where the story seems to be-or doesn’t seem to be going. Initially, I thought this series was building a compelling narrative centered on horror, magic, and the looming threat of the mysterious “Endling.” While the previous arc delivered some of those elements, that overarching sense of danger has all but disappeared. The Endling hasn’t been mentioned, and the narrative seems to have veered off course. © Marvel Comics This issue opens with a call between the leaders of various X-Men factions, concerned about a new slasher film gaining popularity. The killer in the movie is a mutant named “Mutina,” which, given the world’s fear and hatred of Mutants, isn’t entirely surprising. Villainizing Mutants is a familiar tactic in this universe. But what makes this moment stand out is the context: the current status quo has Mutants once again backed into a corner. Many of their strongest leaders are either missing or compromised, and somehow, mutant prisons have been erected with little explanation or pushback. Things are bleak, and this film only adds fuel to the fire. The older X-Men seem to handle the situation with measured concern, but it’s the younger mutants, the Outliers, who are deeply affected. The kids sneak out to see the movie, and the experience leaves them shaken, especially Jitter, who’s haunted by what she saw. One of the issue’s most poignant lines comes from Deathdream: “That’s how they ruin us. Constantly showing us at our worst, by the worst of us.”  It’s a sobering observation that hits hard, reflecting real-world dynamics of propaganda and marginalization. Jitter can’t shake her fear and anger, and eventually, she and Calico decide to confront the actress who plays Mutina. Conveniently, she’s in town. But when they find her, Leticia, they discover she’s just as cruel and mutant-hating as the character she portrays. The confrontation escalates quickly, and Leticia nearly defeats both of them in her dressing room. Thankfully, the Uncanny team arrives just in time to save the two young Mutants, with Wolverine delivering a parting warning to Leticia before they retreat. While this wasn’t my favorite issue, it did have some strong moments. I really like the growing bond between Jitter and Calico, and while Deathdream can sometimes come off as a bit too abstract or enigmatic, his insight in this issue stood out. That said, I can’t help but feel a bit adrift. What happened to the Endling plotline? Are we ever going to get more answers about the Outliers and their origins? Or is this a detour into villain-of-the-week territory? I’ll admit I’m intrigued by Mutina and the mystery of why she hides her face, but for now, I’m left with more questions than answers. Hopefully, upcoming issues will offer some clarity. © Marvel Comics About The Uncanny X-Men #17 Release Date:  July 09, 2025 Written by:  Gail Simone Art by: Luciano Vecchio Cover by: David Marquez Page Count: 26 Synopsis :  HORROR COMES TO HAVEN HOUSE! When a brilliant but exploitative Hollywood director makes a surprise hit horror film featuring a serial-killing mutant girl, there are protests at theaters around the country and a rise in anti-mutant violence in those same communities. But IS it "just a movie," or is something much more insidious going on? Will a malignant force make the X-team their PREY? Will they get out alive, or will it all end in MISERY?

  • REVIEW: 'Magik' #7 - The Cost Of Trust And Power

One thing I’ve come to genuinely look forward to each month is the latest issue of Magik . From the start, I had high hopes that this series would dive deeper into Illyana Rasputin’s character and her mystical roots, and so far, it hasn't disappointed. Not only does it deliver on that front, tickling the part of my brain that lives for fantasy adventures, but it also brings two of my favorite New Mutants back into the spotlight. This issue picks up with Illyana reuniting with Dani Moonstar, following her to the base of the Society of the Eternal Dawn—a clandestine group of magic users and hunters working to prevent global catastrophe. After the fall of Krakoa, Dani aligned herself with them to help protect the world and brought Cal to them after he absorbed the entity known as Liminal. It’s a lot to track, especially if you’re not reading every issue, but the emotional weight lands clearly: Illyana and Dani’s relationship remains strained, and Cal is slowly being consumed by Liminal’s influence with no clear cure in sight. © Marvel Comics Illyana is clearly haunted by recent events, particularly the cost of defeating Liminal, which forced her to confront her own darkness. As former ruler of Limbo and a friend who’s made more than a few mistakes, Illyana’s headstrong, impulsive nature is starting to catch up with her. And people are noticing. True to form, her confrontational streak leads her into a skirmish with the Society’s exemplars, where she gets to show off the new soul weapon she claimed in Limbo.  She’s egged on every step of the way by Liminal, who particularly seems to enjoy antagonizing her despite Dani’s calls for peace. Magik brandishes her Darchild form along with her swords, proving herself ever capable in the heat of battle, but the exemplars are not pushovers, as they manage to hold their own against Illyana with their magical prowess. The clash is cut short, however, by the arrival of the Society’s leader: the enigmatic Embodiment. The Embodiment takes Illyana aside and reveals a potential path to saving Cal and curbing Liminal’s power—but it requires Illyana to work with Dani once again and travel to Las Vegas. Reluctantly, Illyana agrees, on the condition that Cal comes with her so she can keep a close eye on him. The Embodiment consents, but not before delivering what seems to be a dangerous (and possibly deadly) blow to Liminal in an effort to protect Cal. All in all, this was a strong issue. It deepens the tension between Illyana and Dani, further defines Liminal as a compelling and original threat, and reinforces Illyana’s evolving relationship with magic itself. This series continues to impress, and I’m excited to see what Ashley Allen and the creative team conjure up next. © Marvel Comics About Magik #7 Release Date:  July 09, 2025 Written by:  Ashley Allen Art by: German Peralta Cover by: Pablo Villalobos Page Count: 27 Synopsis :  NEW MUTANTS REUNITE!
