REVIEW: 'Magik' #7 - The Cost Of Trust And Power

One thing I’ve come to genuinely look forward to each month is the latest issue of Magik. From the start, I had high hopes that this series would dive deeper into Illyana Rasputin’s character and her mystical roots, and so far, it hasn't disappointed. Not only does it deliver on that front, tickling the part of my brain that lives for fantasy adventures, but it also brings two of my favorite New Mutants back into the spotlight.

This issue picks up with Illyana reuniting with Dani Moonstar, following her to the base of the Society of the Eternal Dawn—a clandestine group of magic users and hunters working to prevent global catastrophe. After the fall of Krakoa, Dani aligned herself with them to help protect the world and brought Cal to them after he absorbed the entity known as Liminal. It’s a lot to track, especially if you’re not reading every issue, but the emotional weight lands clearly: Illyana and Dani’s relationship remains strained, and Cal is slowly being consumed by Liminal’s influence with no clear cure in sight.

Illyana is clearly haunted by recent events, particularly the cost of defeating Liminal, which forced her to confront her own darkness. As former ruler of Limbo and a friend who’s made more than a few mistakes, Illyana’s headstrong, impulsive nature is starting to catch up with her. And people are noticing. True to form, her confrontational streak leads her into a skirmish with the Society’s exemplars, where she gets to show off the new soul weapon she claimed in Limbo.

She’s egged on every step of the way by Liminal, who particularly seems to enjoy antagonizing her despite Dani’s calls for peace. Magik brandishes her Darchild form along with her swords, proving herself ever capable in the heat of battle, but the exemplars are not pushovers, as they manage to hold their own against Illyana with their magical prowess. The clash is cut short, however, by the arrival of the Society’s leader: the enigmatic Embodiment.

The Embodiment takes Illyana aside and reveals a potential path to saving Cal and curbing Liminal’s power—but it requires Illyana to work with Dani once again and travel to Las Vegas. Reluctantly, Illyana agrees, on the condition that Cal comes with her so she can keep a close eye on him. The Embodiment consents, but not before delivering what seems to be a dangerous (and possibly deadly) blow to Liminal in an effort to protect Cal.

All in all, this was a strong issue. It deepens the tension between Illyana and Dani, further defines Liminal as a compelling and original threat, and reinforces Illyana’s evolving relationship with magic itself. This series continues to impress, and I’m excited to see what Ashley Allen and the creative team conjure up next.
